JET LAG may not be caused simply by hopping from one time zone to another. A new study suggests that the way daily routines get left behind on holiday also contributes. For decades, researchers thought sunlight was the major trigger that reset our circadian clocks. But last year, Shimon Amir and Jane Stewart of Concordia University in Montreal showed that if rats were exposed to the breeze from a fan before their daily dose of light, they could soon reset their clocks by breeze alone. At last week’s meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in New Orleans, Amir said the response to light is far weaker in these rats than in untrained animals.
