A FUEL CELL that runs at low temperatures on natural gas and air has been built by scientists in Japan. Because of their low emissions, fuel cells are seen as a promising source of green power. However, existing low-temperature fuel cells run only on hydrogen, which must be produced by a separate system, increasing overall size and cost. Now Takashi Hibino and colleagues at the National Industrial Research Institute of Nagoya have built a fuel cell which runs on natural gas and air. They use a cerium oxide electrolyte doped with samarium, which works at only 350°C,
